Sing songs from your heart to Christ.  Sing praises over everything, any excuse for a song to God the Father in the name of our Master, Jesus Christ .  ~  Ephesians 5:19-20, Msg.

George Bennard wrote the words and music of ’The Old Rugged Cross.’ “His voice was not trained or out of the ordinary,” says George Beverly Shea, “but he had great feeling and expression, and could really put over any hymn.”

Bennard was born in Ohio shortly after the end of the Civil War. He was converted through the ministry of the Salvation Army. He intended to go to theological school, but was sixteen when his father died, leaving him with family

responsibilities.

Eventually he was ordained by the Methodist Episcopal Church and became a traveling evangelist.

During a difficult season of ministry he prayed and

meditated on the meaning of the Cross of Christ. It was then that the concept of the beloved old hymn came to him. Over a period of several months the words were formulated.  “On a hill far away stood an old rugged cross, the emblem of suffering . . .”
