Agencies That Serve
by C. B. Sehorn
The High Plains Food Bank located at 815 S Ross in Amarillo, serves 177 non-profit organizations in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. These organizations include churches, day care centers, children’s homes, senior citizens centers, halfway houses, soup kitchens, and missions. These onsite agencies serve 155,000 meals per month and 5,400 families are provided 10 days of meals per month.
The Food Bank has several programs. First, there is the Food Connection, a prepared food program. “Meat the Needs” and “Hunters for the Hungry” supplies much needed protein. Rural Delivery Service delivers into 14 rural communities at no charge. Texas Second Chance is a collaborative effort with TDCJ where inmates assist with the salvage programs and receive forklift certification and other training for future jobs. The need for the food bank is apparent when one considers that over 70,000 people in our area live near or below the poverty level. Also, since 70% of their income goes toward housing expenses, they may be left short on food. We can help the High Plains Food Bank by organizing a food drive, monetary donation, or by volunteering our time. For the most part entertainment is focused on anything but Jesus; The Passion was an exception to the normal. The physical things around us bring us great comfort, for which I am thankful … yet at the same time if we are not careful they too become a distraction. I am reminded of Gideon’s story, and I think it fits this Passover season because it brings us back to realize this foundational fact: the simplicity of Jesus Christ; Him crucified and risen needs to be the very center of our focus. Very much more and we are distracted, I realize it is a huge step of faith; but it is necessary. Let’s quickly review Gideon’s story and glean some important NT lessons. By way of background, Israel had become distracted; they had strayed from the clear instructions given by Moses and Joshua. As a result God had |

Why aren’t people talking about the atheism or agnosticism of [Hollywood] luminaries at least as much as they are chattering about Gibson and his movie? Could it be that Gibson’s belief offends their unbelief? Or, more profoundly could it be about the most “controversial” figure in history—-Jesus Himself? / While some critics want to focus on alleged anti-Semitism in the film, how about raising the subject of anti-Christian bigotry? / Now that Gibson has made a film mostly in line with what the Bible says, he is treated as an infidel and bigot by many of his peers. / Go and see this film. It might change your life. [Excerpts] |
